Australia Post’s SMSF Gateway and SuperChoice’s ESA service are closing – what’s next?

28 April 2026

If you are using Australia Post’s SMSF Gateway or SuperChoice’s SMSF messaging service, you need to take action soon. Once these SMSF gateways close, you cannot use their ESAs anymore, and your SMSF (self-managed super fund) will no longer be able to receive employer contributions.

To stay compliant and keep receiving contributions, you need to switch to a new SMSF messaging provider and obtain a new ESA (Electronic Service Address). Here are six steps you need to take.

1. Choose the right SMSF ESA provider

Your first step is to select an ATO-registered and SuperStream-compliant SMSF messaging provider, who can issue you a new ESA instantly. This ensures your fund can keep receiving contributions without issues and stay compliant with the ATO’s requirements.

Speed, ease of use and similarities all matter when you are switching. Look for an ESA provider that allows you to:

  • get set up in minutes
  • get an ESA and start receiving contributions immediately
  • have complete visibility of your contribution data in one place
  • view, search and download contributions easily
  • receive affordable and transparent pricing that is similar to your existing ESA provider’s pricing.

If you are an accountant, select an SMSF messaging service that enables you to:

  • add multiple SMSFs in bulk
  • manage all contributions efficiently from one centralised dashboard
  • have complete visibility and control over contribution data.

2. Get your new ESA

Once you have chosen an ESA service, sign up and obtain the new ESA.
This process should be quick. A good SMSF ESA provider will let you:

  • create an account online
  • add your SMSF details
  • receive an ESA immediately.

The sooner you have a new ESA, the sooner you can continue receiving contributions.

3. Update the ATO on your new ESA

After getting a new ESA, you need to update the ATO. SMSF trustees can do this online via the Australian Business Register or through a registered agent. Visit the ATO’s website for more details.

This step is important for compliance and helps ensure contributions are processed correctly.

4. Notify employers

Employers need to know the updated ESA to send contributions to your SMSF. Download an ESA form from your SMSF gateway service provider, complete it and send it to employers as soon as possible. If you have multiple employers, make sure each one is updated.

5. Check if super contributions are coming to your SMSF

After switching, monitor your SMSF gateway to confirm contributions are being received as expected. Look out for:

  • correct payment amounts
  • dates
  • payment reference numbers (PRN)
  • employer details
  • contribution breakdown.

This helps you catch and resolve any issues early.

6. Switch to a compliant ESA provider early

One of the most common mistakes is waiting until the last minute. If your Australia Post or SuperChoice SMSF Gateway service expires before your new setup is complete, contributions may be delayed. Switch early to avoid any disruption.

SMSF accountants should move clients in batches if needed. A structured approach will help you reduce pressure and improve business continuity.

A safe way to switch from Australia Post’s SMSF Gateway and SuperChoice’s ESA service

Colladium SMSF Gateway is an ATO-registered, SuperStream-compliant SMSF messaging provider that makes switching easy.

This service is designed for SMSFs moving from Australia Post’s SMSF Gateway, as well as those switching from other providers. It is your simplest and safest alternative, with all the same features that you are used to.

Everything works the same way. You will be able to:

  • set up in minutes and get a new ESA instantly
  • keep receiving contributions with no interruption
  • download a pre-filled ESA form to update employers on your new ESA
  • view and manage all contributions from one simple dashboard
  • download contribution data in PDF and CSV formats
  • receive email notifications whenever a new contribution arrives.

Colladium SMSF Gateway is powered by MessageXchange, an accredited SuperStream gateway and a founding member of GNGB (Gateway Network Governance Body).

For a limited time, you can get 50% off your first year – that is only $25/fund/year when you sign up by 1 June 2026.
